Good opportunity for preps
Just putting this out there in case anyone has an interest.
I have been a member of the LDS (Mormon) church for my whole life, but for the first time this weekend I went to the cannery in our area (Richmond). I canned 1000 lbs of food and purchased about 1000 lbs more pre-canned. I was really impressed with the facility etc. I was also impressed that the church is willing to let anyone participate and can food (as I think they operate the facilities at a loss). There are canneries all over North America. Not sure about the rest of the world. Probably more spotty elsewhere. Here is the link for the order sheet that describes prices etc: http://providentliving.org/content/d...4352-1,00.html If anyone needs phone numbers for individual facilities, I can probably get them. I am not sure if they are listed on the website. I could not find them. |
Re: Good opportunity for preps
The LDS is a great way to kick start long-term preps. You simply cannot beat the price and the experience is a good one, too. You can stock up on more than you'll need out of what they offer which is rather limited. The facility in my area does the #10 cans as well as the mylar pouches. I made a report in the Anecdotal Reports thread about my last cannery visit. To sum it up; more non-members than members, open talk of martial law and keeping powder dry, cannery was out of many staples and rationing others.
Get it while you can, the window is falling. |
Re: Good opportunity for preps
dvrumo, can you tell me if there is a cannery in Oklahoma?

Here's another that is drilled one whole url deeper to the location finder: http://providentliving.org/location/...26-1-4,00.html I know most people find DYODD to be an asshole response so I did your homework for you. 11224 South Meridian Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73173 Phone (405) 691-6788 Be careful with the phone numbers, many times they are at someone's house. |
Re: Good opportunity for preps
Sorry about that... I misread what dvrumo said... When he/she was referring to the phone numbers of the facilities for some reason I thought he/she was referring to the facilities themselves. Bad case of the Monday's I guess.
Thanks SLV>GLD |
Re: Good opportunity for preps
So how does this work? Just call them up and see what they have available?
|
Re: Good opportunity for preps
Call them up and make an appointment.
They have a list with prices but I don't know if that is cannery specific or LDS specific. I'm sure the products are the same and I bet the prices are too. All the stuff gets grown on the big farm in Salt Lake and then gets sent to distribution centers then to each cannery/storehouse. If I can remember I'll scan my price list and post it assuming there are no copyrights on it. Before doing this the 1st time I checked several online vendors for the nearest equivalent and the LDS prices were always half as much or better. You can't go wrong with this. I plan to go one more time specifically to get preps for barter. This will be cans of dried milk, flour and sugar. I was told at my cannery that they used to allow folks to bring their own dry goods in and pack their own supplies but they cannot do that anymore thanks to health regulations. |

BTW, I emailed the local guy in charge and he told me you do not have to be a member to use the facilities or get the pricing. He was also very kind and eager in his own words to help me get my family prepared. I was thinking of getting a 6 month supply of food for the family to can and make that the Christmas present this year. It seems like this season more then ever this would a fitting and provident gift. Thanks again for your post, and pointing this out to us @ GIM. |
Re: Good opportunity for preps
Seems like SLV>GLD is way more familiar with the ins and outs than I am. This was my first time. I e-mailed my order sheet to the guy running the richmond facility. He gave me a date and time to come (this past weekend). I brought my 10 year old son and we worked with a couple other families preparing our orders. It was a really good day and it really did give my son a different perspective. Most the shelf lives are 30+ years. We were laughing that very possibly he will be sitting with his 10 year old son eating some of those preps and telling about the day we had canning them. The staff were A++. Very nice and helpful while we were there. It took a little while to get things set up to come (like a week before my email was answered). The workers are volunteers that do this in their spare time.

Re: Good opportunity for preps
If you are in an area that does not have a cannery or you can not get in before bovine fecal matter hits the fan, you can also purchase a can sealer.
http://www.cansealer.com/ They are kind of spendy, but we have found that its much easier to buy the grain and bring it home to can it.:banana: |
Re: Good opportunity for preps
I've heard that some canneries will only let you in IF you have a member of the church with you. So it's better to check before you go or make friends fast. :36_3_12:
I went with a family member and was extremely happy. Definately pick up some dried apples and the mashed potatoes! They are better than you can buy off the shelf. |

Re: Good opportunity for preps
Holy crap, those things are way more pricey than I expected.
I would have guessed the $500-$600 range not 3X that amount! They scare the crap out of me, BTW. I won't get near the things while in operation. I'm pretty safety conscious and those things are just begging to remove a finger or at least some wads of hair. There doesn't seem to be any safety mechanisms implemented at all. |
Re: Good opportunity for preps
The Richmond cannery will let anyone participate regardless of membership status (per the man currently in charge of that cannery). I don't know about needing a "sponsor" at any other facility. If it ever was an issue, just talk to members at the local meeting house and I am sure there would be plenty of people willing to go with you.

Re: Good opportunity for preps
We go to the Houston LDS cannery all the time. We are scheduled to go in Jan in fact.
We usually spend 300-400 bucks. The people are VERY nice and I have not as much as been asked about church. FYI: You can also buy bulk supplies from them at cost, anything on that list you can buy in bulk. Bring cash or a check. |
Re: Good opportunity for preps
Wow... yes... thank you!

If cash, bring some small bills so that they don't have to make change. They are not going to have a full till. |

Many canneries will let you borrow a canning machine to take home with you. Just buy the cans, lids, O2 absorbers, etc. and you can can whatever you want to your hearts content. |

Anything in the Detroit area?

Re: Good opportunity for preps
To SW Richmond: Richmond VA
Yes, the cannery is probably very close to you. It was on Virginia Pine Ct. Very close to the Chesterfield county airport, off Route 10 (Iron Bridge Rd) |
Re: Good opportunity for preps
It is very kind and Christian of the LDS to help any family seeking to prepare. Kudos!
